SpellCraft (USA) (Prototype) (Ver 01.03f)
- - togemet2

The following is the SpellCraft, a cancelled SNES game based off of SpellCraft: Aspects of Valor, which released for MS-DOS in 1992. It was being developed by ASCII Corporation and Ybarra Productions and is vastly different from it’s DOS predecessor.

SpellCraft was announced at CES 1992 and was expected to release in the fall of 1993, however, for unknown reasons, it was cancelled. Happily for us, the BBS Warez group “Magical” got a hold of a copy in August 1993 and leaked it to the world. The version we’re presenting today is listed as being Version 01.03f, and appears to be more complete than the version which was leaked by Magical.

Differences

  • The dialogue box on the titlescreen features a blue tinted background.
  • Various sound effect differences.
  • The introduction contains more backstory to the game.
  • Miscellaneous graphical and palette differences.
  • Dialogue differences.

Super Famicom Aging Program Ver. 1.00
- - togemet2

The following software was used within Nintendo’s Uji factory during the manufacturing of the Super Famicom. It appears to be the first version of the Aging software to be developed for the system, and has quite a few differences within the fonts and graphics shown when compared to later versions.

Surprisingly, this specific cartridge was recovered from Brazil. In 2003, Gradiente/Playtronic ceased to be Nintendo’s representative in the region, due to this, many accessories, games, repair parts, and internal equipment were sold to nearby stores. Notably, this is the first known instance of a prototype revision for a retail PCB (as noted by the “X1” on the PCB). It is also the first SNES test cartridge to be found which uses a Mask ROM instead of an EPROM to hold data.

Nintendo DS Lite Firmware (Japan) (Prototype) (X2B)
- - togemet2

The following unit is an X2B revision and was used within the Foxconn factory for an unknown purpose. It’s shell contains slight differences, most notably a small cut-out near the bottom screen and a lack of any text along the back. The firmware itself also notes a build timestamp of November 30th 2005, predating the release of the Nintendo DS Lite by approximately three months.

Differences

  • arm7boot, arm9boot, arm7gui and arm9gui sections have differences compared to retail.

Super NES Control Deck Tester (SELF TEST WCS Version)
- - togemet2

The following cartridge was used at Nintendo World Class Service Centers in order to test various aspects of a faulty SNES Control Deck. Interestingly, the cartridge includes two controller inputs which must be plugged into the unit before testing begins, as well as four buttons on the front face of the cartridge. Due to this, please note that whilst using an emulator you cannot progress past each screen without ROM hacking.

WIDE-BOY64 AGB (TS2)
- - togemet2

The Wide-Boy64 was a device created by Intelligent Systems which allowed for the playing of Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games on a TV screen. It was never offered to the general public, and was only available for purchase by developers and video game publications.

The TS2 was available in limited quantities in the year 2000 before later being replaced by the more widely known Wide-Boy64 AGB revisions, this time with a cartridge slot. As this was produced before the release of the Game Boy Advance, the BIOS contained within is an early revision featuring a different startup sound.

Harvest Moon (USA) (Prototype)
- - togemet2

The following is a late English localization prototype for Harvest Moon by Natsume. Being a localization prototype, most differences compared to the retail game will be minor.

Differences

  • The prototype still contains Pack-In-Video’s publisher screen, leftover from the Japanese version.
  • The titlescreen is much simpler when compared to the more stylized version used in the retail game.
  • Both Amccus and Pack-In-Video have their respective copyright information on their own line.
  • “Licensed by Nintendo” text has not yet been added.

Super Mario World (USA) (Prototype)
- - togemet2

Just before the year comes to an end, we managed to secure and preserve a prototype build of Super Mario World! Dated the 25th of October, 1990 – a whole ten months before the game would hit store shelves within North America, it’s no surprise that there are quite a few notable differences within the game’s dialogue and graphics, with even some additional debugging features being present.

Screenshot Screenshot Screenshot

Differences

  • The sign at Yoshi’s House has different shading and lettering.
  • Text box font is much slimmer than the retail version.
  • Numerous script differences.
  • Donut Plains 2, Donut Secret House, and “Funky” match the Japanese version.
  • Star Road stages lead to the various test stages.
  • Mario will not die upon the timer running out.
  • Various debugging features are enabled.
  • In the staff roll, Boo Buddies and Big Boo are referred to as Boo Diddly and Boo Jackson.
  • Font graphics from an early version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past can be found.

Screenshot Screenshot Screenshot

Debug Features

Being a localization prototype, many debugging options are available, making going through the game a breeze! You’ll instantly notice that Mario is able to walk to any point of the map without completing the previous stage. If this isn’t powerful enough, pressing both Start + Select whilst in a stage will cause it to become instantly completed instead of just exiting the stage.

Dying in a stage is also virtually impossible, as holding up on the control pad and pressing select will cycle through Mario’s various power-up states. Switching to the cape power-up and holding the L and A button will allow the player to fly as long as they want, with another press leading to complete control over Mario’s movement anywhere on the screen.

The last debug feature we were able to notice relates to the castle ending screens. Pressing both the L and R buttons during it will replay the scene, and pressing both L + R and up on the control pad will view the cutscene for the next castle.
