Dinosaur Planet (USA) (Prototype)
(Massive thanks to Joey for writing this page!)
Dinosaur Planet is a cancelled Nintendo 64 game developed by Rare Ltd. The game would’ve been a 3D action-adventure game inspired by “The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time”. The story would’ve followed the adventures of Krystal and Sabre, two anthropomorphic animals, as they traverse Dinosaur Planet to defeat General Scales, the self-proclaimed leader of a tribe known as the Sharpclaw. Overtime, Krystal and Sabre would encounter various other tribes of dinosaurs such as the Thorntail, and the Lightfoot tribes, and eventually come closer to discovering the truth behind the planet’s creation. Much of the same staff behind “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” and “Perfect Dark” were behind the project. The game was set to release in Quarter 1 of 2001, and required the use of the Nintendo 64’s “RAM Expansion Pak”.
After a well-received demo at E3 2000, Nintendo scheduled a meeting to discuss a possible merge of the Star Fox series with Dinosaur Planet. Ultimately, Rare accepted the idea, and Star Fox Adventures was born. From here, much of Dinosaur Planet’s original concepts were scrapped, such as Krystal being a fully fledged playable character. Instead, she was relegated to the beginning area of the game before the player controls Fox from beginning to end. After the game’s release, critics were extremely positive, citing the game’s intuitive control scheme and impressive graphics. However, fans of the Star Fox franchise were extremely unhappy with the game, citing how Star Fox Adventures’ gameplay did not line up with the previous entries. The game sold 800,000 copies by July 2006, and was designated the title of “Player’s Choice” by Nintendo.
Dated December 1st, 2000, this ROM features Sabre replaced by Fox McCloud from Star Fox, featuring text, audio, and visual changes. Krystal, however, remains mostly untouched aside from a small number of voice clips being changed to reference Star Fox. The game itself is playable until the player begins playing as Krystal again, where the game unfortunately crashes when you try to progress.
Included with this release is a cracked ROM done by the help of our good friend LuigiBlood, which removed Rare’s copy protection.
