Nintendo DSP1 Demonstration
- - togemet2

This cartridge contains a simple tech demo meant to showcase the capabilities of the SNES DSP1 chip to developers. It was programmed at Nintendo’s Kyoto HQ, however, this copy originated from Nintendo of America and was donated to us by developer Randy Linden!

The demo begins with a giant wireframe floor featuring the Nintendo logo, with the player being able to move the camera anywhere within the 3D space. The underside of the map features quite a cool little “easteregg” in the form of the text “NEC µPD77C25”. NEC developed this chip in 1980, and it is essentially the same as the DSP1 chip that Nintendo debuted for the launch title Pilotwings.

Screenshot Screenshot Screenshot

Funnily enough, the EPROM itself is an NEC D27C1001A-15, which according to it’s datasheet, only holds around 1,048,576 bits of data. Unfortunately the timeframe that the demo began it’s distribution to developers is currently a unclear. The date stamps within the source code put the Japanese version at sometime in July of 1992, however, the version within the cartridge does not match that of the source, and contains slight differences within the binary. One possible clue may be the date on the battery, which reads July 1991 (just a short time before the North American launch of the SNES).

Something else I was wondering about was the EPROM cover, as it features a drawing of someone who could’ve possibly worked at Nintendo during this time. I reached out to MrTalida, who brought up the striking resemblance to Masayuki Uemura (the lead architect for the Famicom and Super Famicom). Pretty close if you ask me!

Screenshot

Please note that the only method to play this demo within an emulator is via ROM modifications. This is caused by Nintendo not correctly setting an internal header. Additional information here.
